Priorities Steve Eatough Door County not only needs to be a nice place to visit, it also needs to be a great place to live. Quality of life is why most people choose to live here. However, I believe that our quality of life in northern Door County is being threatened and diminished from out of balance over tourism and increased development. Door County’s accommodations and food service industry, the basic tourism industry, is indeed important. The Door County Economic Development Corporation reports that these categories represent about 9% of Door County’s total goods and services produced. Approximately 1 in 5 jobs is in the tourism category, the other four jobs are not. The Door County Tourism Commission reports that room occupancy was up 26.4% over June 2019. For the first 6 months of 2021, room tax collections were up a whopping 54%, or $689,400, over 2019!
